Hi Fellow Driver,

Hey, I don't know how much fuel costs in your area but it's almost $4 a gallon at the local pumps here in the Midwest. (Find the cost for fuel right now in your area.) And since gas prices are over $4 a gallon in most areas of the country, isn't it time for you to learn a few simple ways to use less gas?

Now in case you've never heard the term hypermiling it's the new buzz word used to describe the techniques drivers can use to optimize their vehicle's fuel consumption. Just think, by modifying your driving habits a little you could get more miles per gallon.

And while the term hypermiling is only a couple of years old, the idea of getting more miles to the gallon is old. In fact, during WWII when gas rationing was in effect, many drivers learned to go further with less gas by simply changing of few of their driving habits. Then when the war was over and gas was plentiful and cheap in the U.S. we stopped worrying about our gas consumption. But the days of cheap gas are over and it's time to re-learn how to go further with less gas.

Unfortunately there are some extreme hypermilers who have given hypermiling some bad press. These are the people who coast through stop signs, tail-gate semi-trucks,  and either drive excessively slow or take curves at unsafe speeds. These types of antics are not recommended because they are unsafe for both you and other drivers.

you don't have to be an extreme hypermiler to save money at the pump!

So while an extreme hypermiler may not be concerned with accident rates, rational people like you and I are. We want to save money at the pump in a safe and acceptable way.

Let me give you 5 Safe Hypermiling Tips:

  1. Maintain a steady speed.
  2. Don't speed to stop signs and red lights and then slam the breaks to stop.
  3. Accelerate slowly from a stop.
  4. Slow down. Most cars are less efficient at higher speeds and you may be able to get up to 2 miles per gallon more by driving 55 mph rather than 65 mph.
  5. When possible, park in the shade when it's hot and in the sun when it's cold.

See what I mean? These 5 hypermiling techniques

  • Can save you money at the pump.
  • Don't require you to put yourself or anyone else at risk for an accident.
  • Are easy to do.

And there are many more things you can do to get more miles per gallon. Things you can do if you only knew:

  • What common driving habits waste fuel.
  • When to use your cruise control and when not to.
  • Where to park when you're not at home to save gas.
  • Why a clean car gets better gas mileage.
  • How to drive more safely and go further with less fuel.
